When the portion of the L train between Williamsburg and the Lower East Side was proposed to shut down, a problem arose of how to transport 50,000 people a day, across the East River. Building on the idea that the current bridges in the area are not built for the pedestrian scale, the scheme sought to provide a pedestrian focused crossing that over time can expand to a neighbourhood in the East River.
